1- Get a new social security card with his new last name
2- Put him on our insurance and change his last name on the Medicaid card
Today was my second time going to the social security office to request a new card after an adoption. It took close to 3 hours.
I thought I would just list a few pointers in case we ever do this again or in case someone else is reading this and wants some tips:
Tip #1: If at all possible, don't bring your child(ren) with you.
I made this mistake last time and unless your children wait quietly and patiently in line...it is best to make other arrangements. The security guards are not very forgiving in regards to noise and it is a REALLY LONG WAIT.
Tip #2: Turn your cell phone on vibrate.
They don't allow any talking on cell phones and get very upset when one rings.
Tip #3: Eat before you go.
They don't allow food or drink in the office and the wait is REALLY LONG so chances are, you'll miss one meal while you are there...so eat before!
Tip #4: Bring the original birth certificate (the one you get after the finalization of the adoption), the original final adoption order, and an insurance card or some other ID if your child has one. Oh, and make sure you have your driver's license on hand as well.
Tip #5: Try to get there as soon as they open.
I thought my first time going was a long wait and we arrived when they first opened. It was nothing compared to the wait time this afternoon.
Tip #6: If possible, bring your sense of humor and make friends!
I made some friends with the people next to me and we all cheered each other on when our numbers were called and commiserated about the wait. It made the waiting much less painful.
Tip #7: Keep track of your documents.
They almost lost Anthony's medical insurance card today!
