I've never called 911 before. Well, before today.
Even when Ashley was barely breathing...we drove her to the hospital. They were confused about why we didn't call 911, but I think it had something to do with Hospice telling us she was about to die and that we shouldn't be taking her to the hospital.
Lee broke his arm almost a month ago. We didn't know it was broken until he had an MRI about a week ago. Turns out the poor guy had a fractured radial head (I think this is an elbow?), dislocated elbow, and torn ligaments. He went into surgery yesterday and apparently it was worse than the MRI showed and he needed to have a prosthetic replacement for his elbow.
We made it home last night and I was thoroughly amused by Lee's drug induced comments.
"If you're here then that must mean I'm alive...I'm alive, right?"
"Those sneaky nurses didn't tell me they were going to put me under!"
I gave him his pain medication this morning...brought the boys to day care...came home and after a few more hours gave him his second dose of pain medication.
Not long after, he was feeling nauseous and was about to get up to vomit. I gave him a bowl and told him to wait for me while I got a roll of paper towels.
When I came back, his head was titled back and to the right and his eyes were staring off. I touched his shoulder and called his name and he wasn't responding. Nothing. He was still breathing, but not responding.
So I called 911.
Then his head moved and he started convulsing.
I was talking to the 911 responder when he came back and started talking to me. He was oriented...knew the day of the week, his name, age, the type of medications he had been taking. What a relief!
The paramedics came and took him by ambulance to the ER.
Our neighbors were outside at the time....they were praying... family was praying...friends were praying....
His blood pressure was extremely low. It was determined that the seizure was probably caused by the pain medication. In looking at the side-effects and the signs of overdose for this particular medication...it is truly a miracle that he is sitting next to me right now.
The miracles didn't just stop there, though! Lee just had surgery yesterday...surgery that actually cut through his bone and screwed a metal prosthesis in its place. This type of surgery is extremely painful during recovery (hence the strong pain killers!). They hooked him up to a nerve block for his arm in addition to the pain medication. Well, after his seizure, we clamped off the nerve block medication and he went over six hours without taking anything for pain. Absolutely nothing. And guess what? He feels pretty good!
The anesthesiologist was shocked. So am I. So is Lee.
God is good.
I am hoping that this will be the last time I ever have to call 911, but I cannot wait to see what other miracles God has in store!
