PCIT - Parent Child Interaction Therapy

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
www.pcit.org

We started last Friday and baseline data was collected on how Lee and I each interacted with Anthony during a 10 minute play session.

Why are we doing this? We are hoping it will help us to have more fun with him and have a positive impact on his behavior.

Today we learned about Child Directed Interaction (CDI)

Our homework is to play with him for 5 minutes a day. During our interactions, there are some DOs and DON'Ts

DO:
1) Provide labeled PRAISE (e.g., "You are working really hard building that tower!")
2) REFLECT (basically reflect back what the he has said)
3) IMITATE (imitate his play)
4) DESCRIBE (describe what he is doing)
5) ENJOY (smile and have fun)

DON'T
1) ask QUESTIONS
2) give COMMANDS
3) use CRITICISM or SARCASM

Next week, we'll play with him and keep refining our CDI skills. The therapist will be watching us and providing online suggestions and feedback through an earpiece.

Fun, huh? I'm looking forward to it!
