Not that long ago, I finished training in filial play therapy with (A)'s play therapist. I am now taking about 20-30 minutes once or twice a week to do this with the boys. There are special play therapy toys that we use and every session starts with the same intro,
"This is our special play time. You can say anything you want and do almost anything you want..."
This afternoon, I was making dinner when David called me over to play. He took me by the arm and gently informed me, "Mommy, this is your special play time. We will have it every Thursday."
HAHAHA. That kid soaks everything in entirely too fast. It's great to know that he can now take over in the therapy department:).
David has had great afternoons. Mornings are a little harder. Primarily when he has to get his coat on. Every morning he complains that it is 'lumpy' that he doesn't like that and then throws a tantrum that usually involves screaming and crying until we get to the car. At 6:45am...I am sure my neighbors hate me by now.
Yesterday, I started enforcing some natural consequences for (A). He is a horror during nap time at school. Instead of getting upset and lecturing him about it...he now knows that if he chooses to play during nap time, he will have to rest when he gets home. If he rests quietly during nap time like he is supposed to, he will get to play when he gets home.
Apparently it is more fun to play during nap time because he seems to like to make that choice. He is then so tired that he promptly falls asleep when he goes down to rest at home. Oh well. We'll see how this works. He just has SUCH a hard time controlling his body without someone right next to him. Wish it were easier for him.
