I Don't Remember...

...having the same desire to learn over the summer as David has:).

He told me just the other day, "Mommy, three 'fours' makes 12." It took me a little while, but then I realized....my kid is multiplying! Ok, not really multiplying, but he gets the concept...he is adding up groups of numbers. He is starting to count by fives and just loves loves to count and add.

He is also trying to read, is starting to write using inventive spelling, and just yesterday decided that he wanted to learn all there was to learn about the Statue of Liberty. Specifically, how did they build it and how did they bring it over to the United States.

So we went to the library today. Upon suggestion of a good friend, I let him ask the Librarian for help finding books about this topic. She took him to the computer, showed him how to search for books, and helped him find three excellent books about the Statue of Liberty.

He was thrilled! He checked them out by himself and couldn't wait to read them as soon as we came home.

So we read about the Statue of Liberty...how it was built and brought over to the US.

Then the boys went to work drawing and sculpting their own statues:

(A) liked the fact that they took her apart in order to ship her to the US. Here he is drawing her "skeleton, body, torch, and crown."

David sculpted the crown and torch. He used green to show how the copper changed color.

And there you go....we've added some learning to our summer fun!
