Open Adoption

Here is what open adoption looks like for us and why we like it this way:

We have the privilege of getting together with both of the boys' moms once a month. When I say 'both of their moms' I mean that we actually visit ALL together once a month. Whenever there is a holiday, we celebrate ALL together (including extended birth family as well). It is usually a belated celebration, but it is special nonetheless. There is always such a strong feeling of family.

If we aren't celebrating, we sometimes go to church together and then out to lunch...or to a park for a picnic...or bowling...or to a pool, etc.

We like it this way because it is predictable for the boys. It is our normal...they expect it and look forward to it and feel at ease because they know they will see their moms every month.

It is also awesome because we can reach out to them to ask questions...like when David had a Heritage Festival at school last week and wanted to know more about Ecuador. Or when Anthony's skin and hair were getting dry this winter and we could ask what might work best for his skin and hair.

Relationships take time and so we also find that we learn more about their stories as time goes on.

We feel so incredibly blessed that our boys can grow up building positive memories and close relationships with their birth moms. It is such a gift to get to love the women who are responsible for giving them life and to share with them the joys of watching these two amazing young boys grow up.
